Licensing Questions
All IXgen passwords, including demo passwords, provide full and complete access to all IXgen functions. However, each password has a
different duration depending on the purpose of the password.
•
Demo Passwords
provide seven days of access from the date issued. Typically, a purchase decision about IXgen can be made in a
few hours. This may seem surprising, but remember that IXgen works in one specific area of FrameMaker — the marker system.
You are not wrestling with a large range of concepts and functions at the same time, as you would if you were, say, evaluating a
complete system, such as FrameMaker itself. IXgen offers a rich set of features for working with markers. A few tries with IXgen
(comparing how you are forced to work using only the native marker window) can be very convincing.
If you are new to FrameMaker and are not yet familiar with the marker system in FrameMaker, add a few hours to your evaluation
session. Try marker creation — and especially editing — using only the native marker window. Then add in IXgen, and try some
things you simply can't do with the marker window, such as spell-checking marker text or searching and replacing marker text.
Some IXgen users, after seeing only one or two IXgen tools for a few moments, tell us they've made a decision to purchase IXgen.
We do provide seven days so that an hour or two can be hopefully found in a busy schedule.
•
Temporary Passwords
are issued when an order has been placed on a purchase order, and will expire in approximately 40 days.
Our standard credit terms are NET 30 days; we do provide a few extra days for the processing and mailing of your payment. Please
have Accounts Payable promptly process our invoice. Your password will be renewed on receipt of payment. (In most cases we will
first send a confirming e-mail postcard.)
•
Permanent Passwords
are six years in duration. Once paid, your license is "forever" and you can renew passwords "forever" but the
passwords are six years in length. This is done for technical reasons. (As a practical matter, you'll probably see a new version of
FrameMaker or have a new system long before six years goes by.) For a definition of the terms "password" and "license" see
"What's the difference between a "password" and a "license"? (FAQ question immediately above).

The
Transitional Password
is a special form of the permanent password and has a default duration of 150 days, but you can specify
any duration that is convenient for you. These passwords accommodate the needs of contractors moving from machine to
machine, anticipated system changes, and so on. If you request a new password and we see that a transitional was already in place,
we'll typically issue the new password with no questions asked. If not, we may require additional information about the new
password request. Transitional Passwords are really administrative conveniences for you when you know that a change is coming. If
the anticipated change does not occur, let us know and we will renew your transitional password, or switch to a permanent for you
if that seems like the way to go at the time.
In some cases, if we see that you've requested many passwords in a short period of time (approximately more than one password
every two to three months) we may, at our discretion, automatically assign you a transitional password. This will save you
repeatedly sending in formal transfer requests. Again, let us know when you're ready to renew.
